Abstract
‘Sending back the sun’ is a miracle performed by Imam Ali (PBUH) and the tradition proving this miracle plays a significant part in substantiating Imam Ali’s (PBUH) legitimacy for the position of leadership and guardianship. Therefore, from the advent of Islam onwards, various and considerable effort has been made to understand this tradition and to make it known; Imam Ali (PBUH) himself has attempted to clarify this on the day of consultation and his friends and companions have done the same in different historical periods. This paper classifies and analyzes the views of the jurists, theologians, poets and historians with regard to this tradition and how it is used in religious principles. The paper ends with confirming this hypothesis that this tradition of ‘sending back the sun’ – which has a special application and is addressed substantially in different branches of religious studies – is undeniable and this can be an adequate response to the ideas of those who oppose this tradition.
