The present paper provides a selection of Quranic and narrative arguments about precautionary dissimulation and its necessity. In the first part the reasons for the necessity of precautionary dissimulation – such as protecting one’s life, defending religion and preventing unnecessary bloodshed – are discussed from the perspective of the Qur’an and the narrations. The second part states that all arguments which are generally drawn on in substantiating any religious decree – that is the Qur’an, tradition, intellect and consensus – apply to precautionary dissimulation too. Therefore, the verses pertaining to precautionary dissimulation and a number of narrations which recommend, define or expound this concept are presented in this paper.
