English

Although Western Qur’anic scholarship has been predominantly research-oriented and addressed primarily to academic audiences, recent decades have witnessed the emergence of outreach-oriented works aimed at presenting the Qur’an to non-specialist readers. Such works, situated at the intersection of scholarship and public education, merit critical scholarly assessment. In an effort to trace contemporary developments in Western Qur’anic studies, this article offers a critical examination of The Qur’an: What Everyone Needs to Know by Jane Dammen McAuliffe. Written in the aftermath of September 11, the book seeks to provide a balanced and historically informed portrayal of the Qur’an while challenging widespread misconceptions among Western audiences. Adopting a descriptive-analytical and critical methodology, the study evaluates both the structural organization and the substantive content of the work. Particular attention is paid to the accuracy of its historical claims, the coherence of its thematic presentation, its engagement with current Qur’anic scholarship, and its effectiveness in communicating complex issues to a general readership. The analysis demonstrates that the book makes a meaningful contribution by presenting a moderate perspective and distancing itself from reductive, media-driven stereotypes. Nevertheless, certain limitations—especially in matters of scholarly precision, comprehensiveness, and structural consistency—diminish its effectiveness. The article concludes that while the work represents a significant outreach effort within Western Qur’anic studies, it does not fully achieve its stated objective of providing a consistently rigorous and methodologically sound introduction to the Qur’an for a broad audience.
