Roman Jakobson’s theory of “communication” is considered one of the most important theories in the field of verbal communication. Relying on the individual and social functions of language, Jakobson believed that language in the process of communication is generally oriented toward meaning. Linguistic structures, according to him, revolve around six elements of a message: sender, receiver, message, context, contact, and code—each corresponding to six functions: emotive, conative, poetic, referential, phatic, and metalingual.
The Qur’an is the result of verbal communication between God and humankind, and verbal interaction is, in fact, a foundational element in the formation of religion. Therefore, it holds significant potential for linguistic analysis.
This study, using a descriptive-analytical method, investigates Surah Yusuf within the framework of Roman Jakobson’s communication theory. The findings reveal that all six functions are prominently present in this Surah. The overall structure of the Surah highlights the strong presence of the emotive function, manifested in themes such as God’s compassionate relationship with His servants, the emotional bond between Jacob (peace be upon him) and Joseph (peace be upon him), and vice versa, as well as Zulaikha’s intense feelings toward Joseph (peace be upon him).
The ultimate aim of the Surah is to persuade and encourage the reader to take the main character of the story as a model. The other five functions are utilized in service of the emotive and conative (persuasive) functions.
